Compared with other fenders, Shear fender is different due to its linear load-deflection characteristic in shear. It remains stiff in compression to support heavy loads. It is often used as the conjunction of piles and front panels. In this way, the fender system is provided capacity to withstand large shear forces. Chains and other mechanical stops are used to limit its movement to prevent overload. In this fender system, to avoid erosion from water, extra rubber materials are also used to protect the steel frame involved.
All types of shear fenders have similar profiles. A slight difference helps shear fenders to accommodate to different applications. The following are pictures of different types of shear fenders for reference:
Type 1
type 2
Type 3
Due to its characteristics, like Linear reaction curve and capability to support large weights, shear fender can provide omni-directional protection for structures and ships. Thus, it is applicable for many occasions such as general cargo berths, offshore boat landings, ferry terminals, bridge protection, pontoon yokes, etc.
